I was talking to a prospective HireUA client the other week, and he said:
“I want to hire someone to do marketing, and the budget is unlimited if it works.”
Of COURSE the budget is unlimited if it works.
Give anyone in the world a magic machine where you put $1 in and get $2 out, and they’ll tell you to put unlimited $1s into it. That’s just common sense.
The problem is that so many businesses have these expectations of people, and they honestly do a very poor job of hiring.
This is one of my advantages, and it’s what makes me unlike all the other career coaches out there. I actually advise companies on how to hire, all the time.
One of the things I always talk to them about is real accountability and ownership. You can rarely just hire “someone to do marketing” or “someone to do sales” and expect it to work.
Here’s the thing.
As a candidate, you can use this.
You’ve seen those vague job descriptions full of stuff about results and responsibility, where it’s very, very clear they have no idea what they’re looking for or how to get it.
It’s so easy to position yourself for these roles, because they’re desperate to find someone with ownership. All you have to do is position yourself on that.
That’s it. That’s literally all it takes to get hired these days.
Most people don’t do this. They end up putting in the generic stuff ChatGPT told them to.
Of course, once you’re in the job, you actually do need to get results and deliver. That’s the trade of employment.
That said, there are also plenty of jobs out there in large companies where you can completely coast. Do with that what you want, but that’s my advice.
The biggest thing is standing out. It’s showing that you’re someone who gets results. Someone who can own something.
That’s what gets you interviews.
