A week ago I ordered a new set of golf irons.
And irons, as the name suggests, are made of actual iron. They're reasonably heavy, and they come in a long, awkward box.
Because, you know, golf clubs.
So this week I get the notification that they're out for delivery. I rush home from the gym so I'm sure to be there on time, and surprise, surprise…the box is already sitting in my yard.
The delivery driver had decided his best option was to climb up on our ledge and then heave them over our concrete fence, which is at least 8 feet high.
I used to run an e-commerce company selling olive oil….man, if we ever heard about a driver doing this to one of our customers, we'd have been livid.
And thankfully it was the irons.
Here's why it's such low-IQ nonsense. He didn't call, and he didn't ring the bell. In Europe you usually get a call when a delivery is coming. Instead of a ten-second phone call to see if anyone was home or about to be, he chose to haul a heavy, awkward box up and over a fence. Not because it was easier, but because nobody ever taught him to use his noggin.
I've got a more delicate club still on the way, so now there's a sign taped to my door that says
"TODAY, DO NOT THROW THE BOX OVER THE FENCE. CALL THIS NUMBER."
And then it has giant, red arrows pointing to the number.
That's exactly the kind of imbecile-level nonsense you're competing against in the job market. People fire off the same lazy application 200 times, never follow up, show up to interviews unprepared, and then wonder why nobody calls them back.
But here's the problem. Those same people now have ChatGPT too. They can polish a CV and churn out cover letters as fast as you can. The low bar has gotten a little higher, and the "good enough" stuff all looks the same now.
So beating the guy who throws your golf clubs over the fence isn't enough anymore. You need to stand out from everyone holding the same tools you have. That's what Unfair Careers does. We use the inside data from years of hiring to show you what actually gets someone picked and what gets them ignored.
I'm only taking a handful of coaching clients this month. If you want one of those spots, book a call here:
