You wouldn't take a server from Chili's and drop them into a fine dining steakhouse without training.
They might be amazing with people. Great attitude, fast on their feet, never forgets a drink order.
But they don't know the wine list.
They don't know how to present a $90 tomahawk. They definitely don't know which regulars get the corner booth without asking.
Same skills. Different context. Training required.
And yet…
I consistently see companies that make a hire on Monday and expect that person to be fully ramped by Wednesday.
No SOPs. No screen recordings. No walk-throughs. No structured onboarding. Just a laptop, a login, and "Talk to Sarah if you have questions."
Sarah, of course, is slammed and has no time to answer questions.
Two weeks later the new hire is "not working out."
I have a training method I've developed after placing over 1,100 people and overseeing 10,000 Interviews.
I call it Show, Supervise, Shut Up.
Show — Someone on the team gets on a call with the new hire. Shares their screen. Walks through exactly how the work gets done. Records it. That recording becomes the SOP.
Supervise — For the next week or two, the new hire does the tasks while someone watches. Corrections happen in real time. Questions get answered immediately. Small mistakes don't become habits.
Shut Up — Once they've proven they can execute accurately, the team steps back. Check-ins go from daily to weekly. Feedback flows when needed. But the hovering stops.
Most companies skip straight to "Shut Up" without doing "Show" or "Supervise."
Here's what's wild:
The same company that would never let a new salesperson talk to clients without a month of shadowing and roleplay…will hand their new admin a login and expect magic after 48 hours.
The new hire wasn't the problem. The onboarding was. Or rather — the total absence of it.
This is the kind of thing you deal with as a candidate looking for a job.
It's the type of thing that you can suss out in a heartbeat in an interview.
They use specific language that blares a big, red, WARNING sign…
And yet.
It's the most powerful thing in the world if you know what to do.
In fact, it will practically get you hired on the spot if you address it.
It's in Chapter 8 of my new book, "10,000 Interviews".
Right now, it's launch price of this baby as I launch this new business.
Come midnight on April 30th — it's going up.
