Nobody ever screws up grilled cheese and tomato soup.
Think about that. It's the simplest meal on earth. Bread. Butter. Cheese. Heat. Can of soup. Done.
Your 3 year old could probably make it. Mine tried last week and honestly got closer than some restaurants I've been to.
And yet.
Go to some overpriced bistro and order a "deconstructed grilled cheese with artisanal tomato bisque and a truffle foam reduction" for $28 and it's somehow worse than what you make at home in 6 minutes.
They took something simple and made it complicated. Added ingredients nobody asked for. Tried to make it impressive instead of making it good.
Sound familiar?
That's what most candidates do in interviews.
The hiring manager asks a simple question. "Tell me about yourself." And instead of bread, butter, cheese, heat — instead of a clean, simple, honest answer — they give you the truffle foam reduction.
"I'm a results-driven professional leveraging cross-functional synergies to deliver high-impact solutions in dynamic environments."
That's a $28 grilled cheese. And it's worse than the original.
The best interview answers I've seen in 10,000 interviews are grilled cheese. Simple. Specific. Real. No foam. No reduction. No adjectives nobody asked for.
One sentence per job. One highlight per sentence. Under 60 seconds. Done.
The formula for the perfect grilled cheese answer — the one I timed at 58 seconds that's gotten me offered every job I've ever interviewed for — is in Chapter 1 of 10,000 Interviews.
