The way AI is moving, everyone’s asking the same thing.
Where’s the world going to be in a few years?
What skills should I learn?
What’s going to be worth anything?
My answer is generalists. The people who can wield AI and get a good output out of it, no matter what they throw at it, are going to be some of the most valuable people in any company.
But every industry is moving at a different speed.
My dad is a mechanical engineer. I was talking to him this weekend and he said he uses AI for some stuff, but it very clearly gets things wrong.
And that makes sense. You can vibe code your own little app today. Maybe it’s a simple web app pulling from public databases, you’re not storing any data, and security doesn’t matter. That’s one thing.
Having AI architect a bridge that thousands of cars drive over every day is a completely different thing.
Will it get there someday? Probably.
A few years ago people said there was no way cars would ever drive themselves. Now San Francisco has Waymo, and everyone complains that Waymo sucks and keeps getting into accidents. Meanwhile people look at Tesla’s self-driving and call it absolutely incredible.
Same with flying cars. “It’s never going to happen.” Sure, we’re a ways off right now. But we’ll get there.
I see this every single day. Things that weren’t possible a year ago are possible now.
Right now I’m working on a video, and I tried a new AI editing tool. It does all sorts of cuts and zooms, and it can make the whole thing faster paced. Where it falls flat is custom animations and really illustrating a story. That’s where a professional editor, like the ones we have at my hiring company, still adds the touch.
In a few years? That may not be the case.
That’s what I’m seeing in the market. At my hiring company we fill dozens of different roles of every type, and we’re up to date with AI in every part of the business.
The people that we’re seeing who are learning to use AI are getting wildly ahead in the world and will continue to do so over the next few years. The people who ignore it and cry about it are going to be left behind. Nobody knows what’s actually going to happen to them, but honestly, from the other side of the table, it doesn’t look pretty.
