I’ve lived out in Eastern Europe for 10 years now. Came here with a blog and a dream. 4 companies, well over $10 million+ across them all, a marriage, and a kid later, things have changed.
Namely, priorities.
What made me happy 10 years ago is not the same today.
Back then, the bar was low.
I needed 2 things:
One, pretty girls.
And two, cheap cost of living. And in 24 year old boy definitions…
Cheap cost of living = cheap vodka and beer.
So…Eastern Europe it was.
Now I have the 2 prettiest girls on the planet, Mrs. Mau and Little Miss Mau.
Which means — the priorities have changed.
I don’t drink anymore, and don’t need any more girls.
So…what I need is something else.
And here’s the thing:
That something else might be exactly what you need in your job hunt.
If you’ve been spraying and praying applications into the AI-Abyss without so much as a “sorry” reply…maybe it’s time to change it up.
Eastern Europe isn’t doing it for me anymore.
I can’t do these winters.
Not because anything is “wrong.” Nothing changed really.
Because what worked before stopped working. And I recognized it instead of pretending it was still fine.
Most candidates, on their job hunt, are pretending it’s still fine.
Same resume. Same cover letter. Same ChatGPT summary. Same 500 applications a week into a system that stopped working 2 years ago. And the same result — silence.
But get this:
Instead of changing the approach, they do the same thing harder. More applications. More volume. More of what already isn’t working.
That’s me staying in Poland for another winter and wondering why I’m miserable.
At some point you have to look at the thing that used to work, admit it doesn’t anymore, and try something completely different.
