We were on a train coming home after an epic daddy/daughter weekend in another Polish city. Sitting in a compartment with 2 other kids, and a mom and grandma.
For the first 3 hours of the trip, we didn't speak.
Then, Little Miss Mau said something in Polish (one of the 4 languages she speaks, at age 3).
All of a sudden, grandma perked up.
Asked her something.
Before I knew it, LMM was off to the races. Chattering away about the trams in our city, our tram stop, her school, her school's tram stops, what we did in Krakow, her toy dragons she got, what was in our suitcase, and a whole helluva lot more that I couldn't understand.
(I am a typical American who speaks uno languages)
So anyway, back to the train…
For an hour straight. Seamless. No hesitation. No translating in her head. Just…talking. Flowing from topic to topic like she'd known this woman her whole life.
Trams to dragons to school to suitcases and back again.
She's 3. She can't tie her shoes. But she can hold a conversation with a stranger on a train in her third language and make it look effortless.
And here's the thing:
Most candidates can't do this in their FIRST language.
They get asked "tell me about yourself" and they freeze. Or worse — they launch into a rehearsed monologue that sounds like they're reading from a script taped to the wall behind their webcam.
The hiring manager asks something unexpected and the whole thing falls apart. No ability to pivot. No flow. No conversational agility.
They can only talk about what they prepared for. The second the conversation goes off-script, you can hear the gears grinding.
To a halt.
The candidates who get hired? They're Little Miss Mau on the train.
Topic to topic. Thread to thread. Smooth. Natural.
Responsive to what the other person just said instead of waiting to deliver the next rehearsed chunk.
There's a name for this skill. I call it "Threading". And it's the single most important technique in my new book "10,000 Interviews" that no career coach has ever taught — because none of them have ever been good enough at conversation to even notice it exists.
My 3-year-old figured it out on a train in Poland.
(What can I say, she has the genetics and I wrote the book on it…)
Chapter 6 will teach you how to do it in an interview.
And get hired.
The price for 10KI goes up in just mere hours, at midnight EST tonight.
This is the launch price, so get it while you can…
